When you are replacing sliding glass doors you probably want the maximum performance. There are many different accessory options that will largely influence how your sliding glass doors perform and how it looks. Some of it will be up to your personal choice while some may be more influenced by price.

Your sliding glass door customization begins with the handle. One of the most affordable options is a die cast handle with a thumb latch. They are generally available in many colors and can suit any décor. It can be used for all wood and vinyl sliding glass doors, but is very limited in its use with metal sliding glass doors. A more middle of the road option is handle set that has an aluminum handle inside and a wooden handle outside. It also has the thumb latch and works with any of the sliding glass doors. Generally there are not a lot of color options, but they are sturdier. The most expensive options will be solid metal, usually brass. They can be limited to only vinyl and wood sliding glass doors. Not only do the more expensive models have an internal thumb latch but they usually have a removable key as well.

When considering replacing sliding glass doors, you may want to replace the lock as well. These come in a few different varieties and are mostly a matter of your personal choice. Some of the locks will attach to the sliding glass doors right alongside the handle. This can be a bit bulky and not very pleasing to look at, but it is an option. You can also get other locks that attach to the sliding glass doors at the top of bottom on the frame. These are more discreet and could be preferable to the previous option.

You can even get rollers that are customized to the look of your sliding glass doors. They come in a variety of metals, or steel with a different metal plating. Even though you may not see much of the rollers, if their look is important to you then it can be accommodated. You may also want a strike plate for your sliding glass doors. This will protect it from unnecessary damage and help save you from more repairs in the future. Any part of sliding glass doors that you can possibly imagine is customizable, you just have to find the right place to look.

For the past fifty years sliding glass doors have been gracing our homes with a wonderful natural view and an easy, quick connection to our outdoor patio. But like all appliances they will occasionally break and need to be replaced. Or perhaps you just want to update the décor of your home and a door just fits better. There are plenty of options available to fit both needs when replacing sliding glass doors.

While the size of sliding glass doors you need may already be set that does not limit the choices available to you. Currently a wood is one of the most popular choices as it gives a warm and natural look to your home. Because wood is vulnerable to the sun and moisture so make sure it has a durable finish. Many wooden sliding glass doors will have aluminum or vinyl for the outside and wood only on the inside.

Fiberglass and steel are also very common material for replacing sliding glass doors. The benefit with these materials is they are very durable and can be made to resemble wood without the higher cost.

The most important part of all sliding glass doors is the glass. A high-performance glaze is key to making that glass as energy efficient as possible. The best news is that most of the higher quality sliding glass doors will come with this glaze standard. Some manufacturers will let you specify the glazing when ordering. If there is a lot of sun when you may want to consider a tint to reject ultraviolet rays when replacing sliding glass doors. If you can fins a company that offers decorative stained or beveled glass your options are further expanded. Obscure glass is also available for any room where privacy is of importance.

When replacing sliding glass doors you have two more options for the glass. You can have what are referred to as divided-lite doors, or multiple panes of glass, or you can have false panes of glass that provide the same look. Having multiple panes of glass is more expensive and harder to clean. On the other hand the snap-in false panes are very affordable and mimic the look of divided lites incredibly well. Another option is a mini-blind encased between the two panes of insulated glass. The interior glass panel is removed in order to clean the blinds. This can be pricey but will save the cost of additional window coverings for your sliding glass doors.

The process of replacing sliding glass doors will open a world of possibilities to you. The good news is that there really is no wrong answer. Any choice that you make will provide you with beautiful sliding glass doors.

When you open your sliding glass doors and hear a grinding sound, or use a lot of force to open it, it’s a sign that your rollers are worn out. This is one of the most common sliding glass door repairs. If you’ve been procrastinating the repair for fear that it’s too difficult, have no fear it’s really very simple.

The door panel to your sliding glass doors needs to be removed. Since they’re heavy and awkward to move alone, it’s probably best to get someone to help. Normally the operable panel will swing out on the inside of the sliding glass doors. If there is any overhang on the header you should remove the panel from the outside. Take a small screwdriver and engage the roller screw. Lower the sliding glass doors as much as possible before swinging the bottom out to remove the panel.

Now your way is clear to continue the sliding glass door repairs and locate the roller adjustment hole. Above that hole is where you will find the roller screw. Remove the screw and take the roller off the sliding glass doors. Take the old roller to the hardware store with you and it will be easy to match up with sliding door hardware. You’ll need to look for one that is as close to identical as you can find. If you’re not sure, ask a store employee to assist you. Buy two rollers to save yourself an extra trip later.

With your new rollers in tow, it’s time to install them. Put the new roller in place exactly where the old one was and screw it back together. Flip the door over and do the same thing on the other side. Your sliding glass door repair is nearly complete; at least the hard part is over. Really the hard part isn’t all that hard. All that’s left is to clean the track and put the sliding glass doors back in place.

Protect your carpet before you begin cleaning the track. It would be tragic to mar the beauty of your sliding glass doors with ruined carpet. Vacuum the track along the entire length of the sliding glass doors. Now that there’s nothing to impede your sliding glass doors, spray the track with WD-40 and give it a minute to soak in. Use this time to pick all the dead bugs and out of the very bottom of the track. Be sure you can see nothing but aluminum all the way across.

Putting the sliding glass doors back in place is just as easy as taking it out. Put the sliding glass doors in at the top first and swing the bottom into place on the track. Use a screwdriver to adjust the new rollers. Slide the door to a closed position and leave a ¼” gap on the top and bottom. Make sure the rollers are adjusted so the sliding glass doors stand parallel to the frame vertically. With this finished you have completed your sliding glass door repair.

Sliding glass doors are a great addition to any home. They catch your eye; they let in a lot of light and provide great access to a patio or deck. There are a few things you can do to make installing sliding glass doors yourself as easy as possible.

Choose the site for your new sliding glass doors. This will likely be a wall that connects with your patio or somewhere there is an existing door that you simply want to replace with sliding glass doors. Whatever the case, inspect the wall from both sides to be sure there will be no unforeseen problems. Also check from the basement and attic, where applicable, to see if there are any hidden heating ducts or other problems. It is best to know these things before you begin. Also try to avoid electrical and plumbing fixtures or you can cause yourself more problems than you solve by installing sliding glass doors yourself.

You should mark out the dimensions for the sliding glass doors on the wall. Allow an extra four inches on each side and seven inches on top. This will allow some extra space for shims, double jack studs, a header, all the things that will make the sliding glass doors secure. Turn off the electricity at your fuse box to prevent any unexpected shocks. This is also a good time to put down dropcloths to avoid unnecessary mess. After this is done you’re ready to take down the old wall. Call in a professional if you’re unsure about the electrical or plumbing.

Before you remove the wall studs be sure to brace the area you’re working on. You don’t want the wall to collapse before you put in the sliding glass doors. Once the area is clear make new full-length studs to fit against the outside of your opening and screw them into place. Repeat this process with the width of the opening, using two length of 2×6. Fit this against the bottom of the sliding glass door’s frame.

Now assemble and place the sliding glass doors to the manufacturer’s directions. You may need to remove some carpeting once its set into place, so do so before permanently fixing it into place. Run some thick strips of caulk along the area covered by the sliding glass door’s threshold. Put the unit back in place. Use a level to shim the sliding glass doors into place along all sides and the tops. Screw in the sliding glass doors to the manufacturer’s direction but not too tightly or you can warp the frame. After installing sliding glass doors you can now patch the walls and apply the trim for a most professional look.

Once your get your sliding glass doors installed there will normally be very few problems you have to deal with. The sliding glass doors are designed in such a way that very few things can go wrong apart from the glass breaking and needing to be replaced. This normally needs to be done by a professional and is very difficult to do yourself. There are a few things you’ll run into with sliding glass door repair that are easily fixed on your own.

The single most common problem with sliding glass doors is that they can stick. It can be caused by a variety of reasons but the easiest solution is the first to try. Check the track for foreign objects. You are looking for anything, first, pebbles, mildew, and leaves, anything that could get in the way of the rollers. Gently and carefully clean out anything you find. You don’t want to dent the track while in the middle of your sliding glass door repairs so be cautious. While you’re doing that also check for any dents that the sliding glass doors could get stuck on. No matter how small the dent may appear, it can still impede the movement of the sliding glass doors. Once you are sure that the track is sound, spread some powdered graphite into the rollers. Rub paraffin wax along the track to make it open more smoothly.

While you are ensuring that your sliding glass doors movement is smooth, you may as well check a few other things. Next in your sliding glass door repair you should check the alignment of the latch. It may not be catching properly and you can realign the mount with the latch if needed. Slide the doors closed and watch the latch to be sure it secures properly. If it doesn’t line up then loosen the screws on the latch and realign it with the mount. Tighten the screws again and check to see that it is your sliding glass doors are secure. Checking the weather stripping can also help any leaks while you’re about your repairs. If there are any leaks some stick-on weather stripping can be applied in just a few minutes.

If you notice the sliding glass doors fog up because of condensation, this can be fixed as well. It is not a good idea to replace just the glass in most cases. The expense would outweigh the benefits. The best idea is to just replace the sliding glass doors completely. In the long run it will save you some money and be easier to deal with.

Finally, with the sliding glass doors repair it is always wise to check the weather stripping. If your sliding glass doors are leaking this is the best fix. Pressure sensitive or stick on weather stripping can be purchased very easily. Apply it around the leaky sliding glass doors and it will be as good as new.

Sliding glass doors are extremely popular and have a special appeal to many people. Most people that have sliding glass doors love the. Typically sliding glass doors are a heavy traffic entry point into and out of the home. That’s means over time they will break and need repair. Proper maintenance will help defer the process of repair. Sliding glass doors repair can be a challenge , but fortunately there are several options including do it yourself.

As the doors begin to age you will notice they become harder and harder to slide open or closed. Aluminum framed doors are more likely to break sooner. Sliding doors move along metal, wood, or vinyl tracks fitted into their frames at the top and bottom. The weight of the glass eventually wears out the nylon rollers many sliding glass doors have. Some doors use stainless steel roller sand these will bind over time form moisture and rust. Repairs of sliding doors can be quite challenging and frustrating the first time you attempt a do it yourself job.
